A Potted History of Pentins Financial Planners

In the ever-evolving landscape of financial advice and planning, there are few firms which have stood the test of time like Pentins Financial Planners. The company, in one guise or another, has spanned several decades and has consistently demonstrated a commitment to making a difference for the benefit of the client. Please read on to learn more about the history of Pentins Financial Planners….

Where to begin…?

Pentins was originally an accounting firm, founded in 1926 and the name was taken from one of the original accountants, with David Pentin being the last Pentin to work within the firm, retiring back in 1999. The accountants were keen to offer their clients a comprehensive financial planning service within their practice and the first incarnation of Pentins Financial Planners was born from there.

Moving swiftly on…/ Jump to….

Since 2016 Pentins Financial Planners has been in the ownership of Samantha and Oliver Secomb – a mother and son team who have worked individually for other organisations in the past before teaming up.  Under their ownership, Pentins has continued to build on the reputation the company had for its personalised approach and commitment to client success.

The Senior Team

Both Sam and Oliver are Fellows of the Personal Finance Society. This award is widely accepted as the premier qualification standard for advisers in this country. Sam also holds a Master’s in Business Administration (MBA) which has garnered her skills for developing the company.

Sam has worked in the financial services industry for over 30 years. She began working with Pentins in 2015 and since 2023, after spotting a gap in the market, splits her time between Pentins and Women’s Wealth. At Women’s Wealth, Sam can focus on training female advisers and serving an online based client bank.  Sam is also popular on the financial panel/speaking circuit and is a Telegraph columnist.

Oliver has worked in the industry since leaving university in 2011 and holds a BA Hons in Finance. At Pentins, he focuses his time on business development and working with Pentins clients. His favourite part of the role is seeing how financial planning can be used as a tool to embolden and reassure clients in their financial decision making.

Remaining Fiercely Independent

Sam and Oliver feel very strongly that, as Independent Financial Advisers, we really should be independent, unbiased and have access to the whole of market. To ensure this remains the case, we became directly Authorised in 2018. This means we follow FCA regulations but can exercise our own judgement based on our experience – we are not led by an external company and their ideas, or ownership.

We utilise cutting edge tools to conduct our own research on platforms, providers, and funds according to our philosophies, which have been developed over the years of experience in the industry.

Expanding Services and Expertise

Pentins Financial Planners continues to evolve with the changing needs of its clients. Recognising the importance of a comprehensive and rounded approach to financial well-being, Sam and Oliver have expanded its services beyond traditional financial planning. Today, Pentins offers a wide range of services, including cash flow modelling, retirement and estate planning, along with tax strategies.

In 2022, we were joined by another small team, with an outlook in line with ours, who specialise in the corporate world. This has further developed our skill set as a company with more advisers coming onboard, expanding our service offering.

The expertise and diversity of the team enable us to provide holistic financial solutions tailored to each client’s unique needs and goals.

Commitment to Education and Empowerment

A cornerstone of Pentins’ philosophy is the belief that an educated client is an empowered client. We endeavour to coach our clients to understand their investments, actively engaging them in the planning process, empowering them to make informed financial decisions.

We are also committed to the training of our staff and hope that all team members will work towards qualifications themselves – not just our advisers.

Looking Towards the Future

As Pentins Financial Planners continues to grow, we remain focused on the future. With an ever-changing financial landscape and new challenges on the horizon, we continue to innovate, adapt, and uphold our legacy of excellence in financial planning.
